The Seed: January 15, 2023

The Seed Newsletter: January 15, 2023

“Somewhere we must come to see that human progress never rolls in on the wheels of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and the persistent work of dedicated individuals who are willing to be co-workers with God. And without this hard work, time itself becomes an ally of the primitive forces of social stagnation. So we must help time and realize that the time is always ripe to do the right thing.”

(Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s last Sunday morning sermon - March 31, 1968)

The time has come when we remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the legacy that he continued. I would say that it is time to pause and remember, but there was no pause in Dr. King. The line “we must help time” rings in my ears as we think about this upcoming weekend. It is fitting that this is a weekend of service because the legacy, the dream, the work is ongoing. This is a holiday that requires movement. We must use our time wisely. How will you help time this year in ways that bring about positive change in our world? How will you be God’s co-worker?

As we remember Dr. King, it is fitting that we also remember a true Disciple of Christ within our congregation. Dave Caldwell was a person of movement who touched so many lives in his years of physical presence on this earth. With the memories we will all share together on Friday at the visitation and Saturday in the memorial service, we know that movement of Dave Caldwell continues. He is still at work in our hearts…and that work calls us to keep moving.

This will be a beautiful weekend to gather, to remember, and to move. I hope you will join us.

Much love,

John Callaway

*We hope you can join us for worship this Sunday.  We will be holding an in-person service at 11 AM, and also streaming the service live on YouTube. Once the service is over, you will still be able to watch it on YouTube or Facebook at your convenience.

Beginning on Wednesday, November 2 and for the next 24 weeks the Wednesday Bible Study group will begin a new study on “Understanding the New Testament.” The course is led by Professor David Brakke, Ph.D. This is a 24 lecture series that takes us behind the scenes to study not only the text of the New Testament, but also the authors and the world in which it was created. The course explores Jewish lives under Roman occupation, reflects on the apocalyptic mood of the first and second centuries A. D., witnesses the early Christians’ evangelism beyond the Jewish communities, and witnesses the birth of a faith that continues to shape our world today.

There is no need to purchase books or course materials, as the WBS coordinator distributes appropriate reading materials and a Zoom link each week for each lecture. Please join us this fall in learning about our Christian faith, its scriptures and authors.
